Girdles increase the torsional rigidity of the cylinder block and evenly distributes load and dampens harmonics by bolting the main cap studs together. The increased rigidity and strength of these girdles on the bottom end allows extra stress to be placed on these motors. Highly modified vehicles using Nitrous Oxide, Turbochargers or Superchargers can aid from these girdles as the increased stress on the cylinder block is reduced. Based GM's Kappa platform, the Beira features new front and rear body sections made from lightweight composites instead of steel. Audi and Mercedes are big players (we still think the Mercedes R-Class a niche too far), and BMW play the game too, with cars like the BMW X6M and the new BMW 5 Series GT. If the Mercedes E Class Coupe Estate does go in to production it will bring to five the number of models based on the same Class – the saloon, the coupe, the cabriolet and the estate plus this new Coupe Estate.
